Times offers prepay card

Monday April 28 2008

The Times has become the latest national newspaper to offer readers a prepaid payment card, a trend started by the Daily Mirror.

The Times MasterCard prepaid card and "eccount" was launched by Tuxedo Money Solutions, which has provided a similar co-branded card for News International stablemates The Sun and News of the World since last year.

The Daily Mirror launched a similar service, Quidity, in October 2006.Offering the service gives newspaper publishers the opportunity to build a database and extend their relationship marketing activity.

The Times card has the functions of a credit or debit card but allows users to top up the value on the card from their eccount, limiting the risk of fraud.

Up to £5,000 can be held in the eccount and moved on to the card by text, internet or phone as required.Times Media will market the card in newspapers and on their website. The cost of the card is £12 with £7 cashback on the first load.
